We recently completed such a project in Reading, MA, and we're proud to share how small changes created major improvements for a wonderful couple.
This project showcases our expertise in accessible bathroom renovations, which are just one aspect of our complete
bathroom remodeling services.

The Challenge: When Love Meets Logistics
We were contacted by one of the sweetest couples we've ever had the pleasure of working with. This older couple faced a challenge that many families encounter: the husband was dealing with some health issues, and his devoted wife had become his primary caregiver. While their love and commitment to each other was inspiring, their existing shower setup was creating unnecessary obstacles.
The previous shower system, with its sliding glass door and limited storage, was making it difficult for the wife to provide the assistance her husband needed. What should have been a simple daily routine had become a source of stress and safety concerns. The sliding glass door particularly posed a significant barrier, preventing easy access for a shower chair and creating potential safety hazards.
Our Solution: Accessibility Meets Functionality
After carefully assessing the situation and discussing the couple's specific needs, we developed a comprehensive plan that would prioritize both safety and functionality without compromising on comfort.
Complete System Removal and Rebuild - We began by removing the existing shower system entirely – walls, pan, and all fixtures. This allowed us to start fresh and build a solution specifically tailored to their accessibility needs.
Smart Storage Solutions One of the biggest challenges was the severe lack of storage in the original setup. We addressed this by installing a new shower system with plenty of built-in shelving. These weren't just afterthoughts – they were strategically placed to be easily accessible and practical for daily use.
Improved Access and Safety The sliding glass door had to go. It was completely impeding access for the shower chair and created unnecessary safety risks. We replaced it with a curtain rod system that allows for complete, unobstructed access while still maintaining privacy and preventing water from escaping the shower area.
Familiar Comfort Features Change can be difficult, especially when mobility is a concern. To maintain the same level of comfort and familiarity, we carefully replaced the three grab bars in their exact existing locations. This meant that the husband could continue to find stability in the places he was already accustomed to reaching for support.
Seamless Integration To ensure the new installation felt like a natural part of their home, we matched the paint to the existing space. The result was a shower that looked like it had always belonged there, rather than an obvious modification.
The Results: Major Impact from Thoughtful Changes
The transformation was remarkable. What had once been a daily struggle became a manageable, safer routine. The built-in shelving meant that all necessary items were within easy reach. The open access design allowed the wife to assist her husband safely and comfortably. The familiar grab bar placement provided the security and confidence he needed.
Sometimes the most meaningful improvements come from understanding that it's not about the size of the change – it's about the thoughtfulness behind it. Something as simple as built-in shelves can make the difference between independence and dependence, between safety and risk.
Project Success: On Time, Under Budget, Beyond Expectations
We're proud to say that this project was completed on time and under budget – but more importantly, it was completed to the complete satisfaction of our clients. Seeing the relief and gratitude in this couple's eyes reminded us why we do this work.
